How to Give the Best Foot Massage

If you have a routine where most of your time is spent walking from one place to another, you are likely to experience foot ache that wouldn’t let you sleep comfortably or take your keen dog for a nearby walk. My wife and I have a great time before bed giving each other a lovely and soothing foot massage. I’ve taught her the right techniques. You can also use the best foot massager to have the same kind of massage.

In this great post, I’ll be showing you simple steps on giving the best foot massage to your partner. No need for calling any costly massage therapists or visiting any luxurious spas. I’ve been using this method for many years as a self-care practice, and it has done wonders for me.

Normally your feet are so built that they easily handle all the weight and burden. However, standing too long, walking too much or wearing poorly fitted shoes often results in feet ache. Here is a quick guide you can use to stretch out your feet and soothe the muscles by reducing the swelling causing the pain. I will explain how to focus on the tender spots and press them for relieving the tension.

Things Required

  • A comfortable and soft place where you sit or lie down.
  • Oil! It can be olive oil or coconut oil. You can also use some healing balms in case the pain is severe.
  • The assistance of your partner.

Best Foot Massage Techniques

I would mention here again that you can do this on your own, but receiving it from your partner or another family member would be more relaxing.

1: Ankle Rotation Technique

We will start off with ankle rotation. This prepares the feet for further massage and helps to loosen the stiff joints. Cup on of your hand under the heel right behind the ankle for bracing the foot and leg. Next, grasp the ball of your foot using the other hand and gently turn your foot gradually at the ankle for about 5-10 minutes in each direction. This helps to lower the stiffness in joints and muscles around your feet.

2: Pulling & Squeezing

This should be done very carefully. To perform the pulling and squeezing, grasp the feet underneath the arch. Using the other hand and starting with the big toe, hold it with the thumb and index finger from beneath. Now gradually pull the tow and as your pull slide your fingers to the top and back to the base. Repeat the process with all the other toes of both the feet.

3: Toe Slides Method

This is a great technique. You can apply oil to your fingers. Grasp the foot behind the ankle cupping under the heel. Now using your index finger of the other hand, slide it between the toes back and forth a couple of times.

4: Arch Press

With the heel of your hand, push as hard as you slide along the arch from the ball of the feet and to the heel back and forth. Repeat this five times. This part of the foot is tough and can bear the extra exertion you put. However, if the muscles are strained or there is a foot injury, consult a specialist.

5: Overall Massage

You can use coconut oil or olive oil and massage in circular motions all over the foot. Massage in between the fingers, underneath the heel and sole and towards the ankles. Keep pressure on the arch, and be gentle while working around the toes. Once the oil has completely absorbed move on to the other feet and does the same.

Hope this guide was helpful. If you have some suggestions, feel free to leave them in comments.
